My son came to visit and asked me if I'd ever seen "About Time". "Is that the one with Justin Timberlake?" I said. The next thing I know he was streaming it and the moment I saw it was a British film I was like "Ugh". After a few minutes I was hooked and slowly won over by the dry humor of Bill Nighy and the sweet vulnerability of the Irish actor (whose name escapes me at the moment) playing Tim. The premise of the movie was two-fold; a coming of age romance for Tim and simultaneously a story of love between father and son. Without revealing any spoilers I will say that the ending had both me and my son in tears. We started talking about times with my son's grandparents and what experiences he wished could be replayed with more focus so they (the grandparents) would have felt the love my son had for both of them. I told him they knew that without it being said. Then I shared some of my memories of my parents and younger brother who died when my son was two years old. As the review headline states, this movie is a conversation starter. I highly recommend that everyone sees it.

At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers he can travel in time... The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim's father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think. Moving from the Cornwall coast to London to train as a lawyer, Tim finally meets the beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, then an unfortunate time-travel incident means he's never met her at all. Like a cheap dessert - much too sweet
What is going on? 10/10 reviews all over the place. Has everybody gone completely mad and lost their critical faculties?
I'm a huge fan of Richard Curtis as he'd produced some great work over the years, but this...I think I can best liken it to one of those desserts you sometimes get in cheap restaurants. When you take the first mouthful it's quite nice but by the end you feel slightly sick from the unremitting sweetness of it all.
So that's my first problem with it. I like feel-good movies and Richard Curtis has done some great ones. But you need light and shade and there is no shade in this...it's all total sweetness and light.
My second problem is that it is actually completely ridiculous and unbelievable. I read a great book recently by an unsigned author called Keith A Pearson. It was about a middle-aged guy doing some stuff on an ancient computer from the 1980s and somehow he is transported back to a crucial weekend when he was 16 in 1986. I totally believed it - I suspended my disbelief. But I simply could not suspend my disbelief when the main character in About Time kept slipping behind a curtain and clenching his fists!
I was given this in DVD format as a present so I'm very sorry if that person sees this review but I can only say that if I had actually bought it I would ask for my money back.
Sorry everyone!
